Project OXCART was the CIA's A-12 — the titanium, high-altitude reconnaissance aircraft Lockheed built as the U-2's successor. In 1959 the Agency awarded the OXCART contract to Lockheed, and on 12 November 1965 the A-12 was declared operational. In 1965 it sustained Mach 3.2 — just over 2,200 mph — at 90,000 feet, a record for piloted jet aircraft. It was America's first stealth aircraft, though never completely stealth.

Its only operational reconnaissance deployment was BLACK SHIELD, flown from May 1967 to May 1968: six pilots and three A-12s at Kadena Air Base, Okinawa, Japan, flying 29 missions. The first flight, on 31 May 1967, was piloted by Mele Vojvodich. President Johnson ordered the A-12 retired by 1968.

The artwork is an artistic interpretation, not an engineering diagram: a monochrome technical study of the airframe in the register of mid-century aerospace drafting. It is not an accurate blueprint, and no specifications beyond those above are depicted.
