The Gestapo hunted her across occupied France and never caught her. They called her the Limping Lady — and described her as the most dangerous of all Allied spies.

Virginia Hall was born in Baltimore and dreamed of the foreign service. At 27, a hunting accident in Turkey cost her her left leg below the knee. Fitted with a wooden leg she named Cuthbert, she was told the injury barred her from becoming a diplomat. So she found another way to serve.

When World War II broke out she drove an ambulance in France, and after the fall of France she made her way to England and volunteered for the British Special Operations Executive, training in weapons, communications and resistance work. She went on to run agent networks for the SOE and then the OSS: organising safe houses, helping escaped prisoners of war, and recruiting French men and women to the resistance — all while staying one step ahead of the Gestapo, who knew only that a woman with a limp was outsmarting them.

For her courage she received the Distinguished Service Cross — the only civilian woman ever so honoured. She later joined the CIA on December 3, 1951 and served fifteen years in covert action, chiefly supporting resistance inside the Iron Curtain, until her retirement in 1966. She worked under many names — Marie Monin, Germaine, Diane, Camille, Nicolas — but history remembers Virginia Hall.

The artwork is a stylised tribute — the wooden leg she called Cuthbert. It is not a portrait.
