A group of soldiers huddles around a radio with the volume low, listening to a sultry voice sing Lili Marlene in German. It was the song the Nazis had to ban — and it was doing exactly what it was meant to do.

Marlene Dietrich is remembered as the first German actress to conquer Hollywood. Fewer know she lent that voice to the OSS. In 1944 she recorded anti-Nazi songs in German for the Morale Operations Branch's MUZAK project, which broadcast "black" radio across Europe. The most popular station, Soldatensender (Soldiers' Radio), recruited her alongside Bing Crosby and Dinah Shore to sing special versions of popular songs with lyrics written to sap German morale.

Her Lili Marlene was so effective the Nazi government banned it and warned people not to listen — then, under pressure from its own soldiers, reluctantly put it back on the air as the song played at the end of every broadcast. The US Strategic Bombing Survey concluded the "black" programs were as devastating to German morale as an air raid, leaving so much skepticism that many no longer believed Nazi propaganda.

In 1945 she received the Presidential Medal of Freedom — the accomplishment she said she was most proud of in her life.

The artwork is a stylised tribute — the vintage broadcast microphone, and the red "on air" light that meant the music was about to work on the enemy. It is not a portrait.

Care: machine wash cold, inside out, with like colours. Tumble dry low. Do not iron directly on the printed area.
