The OSS officer who parachuted into occupied France carrying his fishing rod. John Hadley Nicanor Hemingway — Jack, the eldest son of Ernest Hemingway — was raised in Paris speaking French before English, and those language skills became his ticket behind enemy lines.

At 19 he left Dartmouth to help liberate the country where he grew up. Transferred to the OSS, he taught demolitions, radio operations, code work, navigation, unarmed combat and tradecraft at the Chrea training camp in Algeria. Then came the jump: a hole in the floor of a B-17 over Nazi-occupied France. Told he could not bring a fishing rod, Jack replied that it was an antenna disguised to look like a fly rod. Jack, his partner Jim, and the rod all survived; the radio did not.

Days later, fishing a canyon stream, he prayed no fish would bite — a German patrol was marching past overhead, and a bite would have meant a crowd, and exposure of the American flag on his uniform. Captured and wounded three times in the right arm and shoulder, he was held as a POW, survived the doomed Task Force Baum raid, and made his own escape. Liberated in April 1945, he earned the French Croix de Guerre and the Bronze Star.

The artwork is a stylised tribute — the parachute and the fly rod that came down with him. It is not a portrait.

Heavyweight 6.1 oz/yd² (206.8 g/m²), 100% ring-spun US cotton, pre-shrunk, relaxed fit, double-needle stitched with no side seams and a sewn-in label. Sizes S–4XL. Printed on the front at 300 DPI; plain back. The main artwork prints at 10 × 10 in and the QR at 1.8 × 1.8 in.

Care: machine wash cold, inside out, with like colours. Tumble dry low. Do not iron directly on the printed area.
