CIA's Office of Research and Development built a camera so small and light that a pigeon could carry it. Strapped to the bird's breast, it was released to fly home — and on the way, it flew straight over the target, taking photographs the whole time. A pigeon is one of the most ordinary sights in the sky, so the bird concealed its role as an intelligence collection platform among thousands of others.

The pictures were extraordinary. Because the pigeon flew within a few hundred feet of the target, its imagery was far more detailed than anything an aircraft could take from tens of thousands of feet, or a satellite from hundreds of miles up. The camera could be set to begin photographing after release or after a pre-set delay, and it took a series of stills at a fixed interval; a tiny battery-powered motor advanced the film and cocked the shutter.

The camera itself measured just 4.7 × 2.4 × 2.2 centimetres. The details of pigeon missions are still classified.

The artwork is a stylised multi-colour tribute to the operation — the pigeon, the breast-mounted camera and its view of the city below. It is not a photograph.

Offered in twelve garment colours: the artwork carries light typography on dark garments (Black, Navy, Graphite, Pepper, Espresso, Sapphire) and dark typography on light garments (Moss, Chambray, Mustard, Butter, Light Green, White).

Garment: Comfort Colors 1717 garment-dyed t-shirt. Heavyweight 6.1 oz/yd² (206.8 g/m²), 100% ring-spun US cotton, pre-shrunk, relaxed fit, double-needle stitched with no side seams and a sewn-in label. Sizes S–4XL. Printed on the front at 300 DPI; plain back. The main artwork prints at 10 × 10 in and the QR at 1.8 × 1.8 in.

Care: machine wash cold, inside out, with like colours. Tumble dry low. Do not iron directly on the printed area.
